A lot of those live guys suck at cards but they're good at reading people.

Maybe he watched your reaction as the river card came, correctly decided that you were disgusted, and so he bet out strong.

well ok you guys have convinced me there could definitely be logic to his play, and that was the purpose of the thread, so thanks. this guy, however, sucked. also i think he might have been drawing without odds just to bluff... who knows.

I don't see how this play is so incomprehensible or bad. All these people saying saying it's an idiot play or "people just make bad plays" or whatever should try and explain their reasoning. It looks to me like he check/called the turn thinking maybe he had the best hand, maybe not. Then he figures that spade is a good card to bet because he actually has a chance of folding a hand better than his.
