I'm so disturbed by this thread I don't even know where to start. Hate Bush... that's fine. Hate the war... that's fine. Hate your own country... I guess that's fine too.
However, why would you abandon anyone in need at a time like this? And how do you think the government would "find" or "finance" 20-30 billion in "reserve" cash. It's this type of "the government will provide" that has turned us into an economically upside-down welfare state. I'm guessing you're a democrat (based on your disgust for Bush)... and I'm glad to see you are following suite with all the other liberals... ABANDON ANYONE AND EVERYONE IF IT MEANS MAKING REPUBLICANS BAD. Do you not realize that if it wasn't for the lower-middle class African-American voting block... democrats wouldn't have won a national election in the last 30 years. NOW you turn your back on those that have made your party a viable platform. And I'm sure, somehow... this will all be blamed on the Evil Empire and how we wasted all our money on the War. |

It is amazing to me that ther are people who are so partisan that they are willing to forsake the people of NO because they hate the President.
I truly hope that this post is no more than a standard internet forum troll, but I fear there are far too many people who are so blinded by their hatred that they are unable to act at even the most basic human level and help these people in this terrible situation. Helping these people is far more important than any political point you might be trying to make. Does the OP really want more people to die in order to make the President look bad? How can this be an opinion of a true, caring, liberal lover of humanity? What would you say about a Christian charity who stated that they refused to help because NO was a wicked city? Sounds like the OP's heart might go out to them, but not far enought to go beyond his politics. Sad. |

[ QUOTE ]
Many people did not have to option to leave due to lack of financial and other resources. Also many people can not afford to easily move away due to many reasons, like jobs and such. To say they are all "foolish" is asinine, are you saying anyone that lives in california is foolish, there could be an earthquake anytime there, does that make everyone in the state foolish? Anyone that lives in a flood zone in the united states, or for that matter any country, are they foolish? [/ QUOTE ] Serious question: How many days head start did people have? If I knew a Category 5 Hurricane was heading my way, I would find a way to escape. Having levees assumes an attempt to protect the city. But not keeping levees, roads and bridges in good repair is gross negligence by the city and lack of concern by the residents. People in flood zones take their chances, but an overflowing river is slower than a hurricane. My cousins used to live in the Grand Forks area. The people there could sandbag very efficiently (until the last big flood which overcame the dikes). But still, there is time to grab your shjt and leave when you see torrential rain and a rising river... Earthquakes--again you take your chances. Nobody is making you live on the fault line. |

And how many years did they have to repair the levee that they knew was deficient?

Well not to worry ..... real americans know what to do at a time like this ...... i just doubled my donation to make up for the likes of you.
If you are unable to recognize the need for Americans to answer the call regarding Katrina and New Orleans (plain and simple as it is) then I won't hold you too accountable for the need to step up regarding our country's need in the War on Terror ..... after all that is more complex. |

I agree with you that our donations should not be necessary, but that won't stop me from donating.
It did, however, prompt a letter (you can read here) Please think about donating blood. This is something that government money simmply cannot provide. Blood must come from people. |

![]() I kinda like this whole thread. Aren't we all outraged by this because the government has performed so poorly? That's OP's concern, and why he's not donating. A lot of people have made great points to the effect of "Ya, the gov't sucks, but these are fellow Americans who would try to help us if we were in need." |
