in general i hate choose the 1 best of anything. however, a case can be made for 2 people.

david sklansky has written almost all of the "best" and comprehensive books on poker. if someone just read sklansky's books they would not miss much. he has bettered countless players with his great books.

doyal brunson in writing the original super system changed the poker landscape. it had a huge impact on poker. many poker players simply call this the bible. however, that was a long time ago, and it is not really a good poker book anymore. The book in general is poorly written, and it is far from comprehensive.

i think that as terrific as ssh and hoh are, the "best" has to have the most impact on the game. and sklansky through his top quality books probably would be my choice, but i would understand if someone chose brunson. i can not see anyone else receiving a vote.

I've read both of Alvarez's poker books. The Biggest Game in Town is one I've read many times. I think McManus is the better writer. I enjoy hodge-podges. My favorite author is probably Bill James, and his books aren't as organized as you would probably like, either.

A paragraph by Zee will certainly make you more money than anything McManus will ever write. I often marvel at how Ray is able to say more in three choppy sentences than I can say in five paragraphs that take a half-hour or more to write. I find McManus much more enjoyable, though. I play poker because it's fun. I could give a rip about the money.

Personally, I'll take a paragraph by Ray Zee over an entire book by McManus.

Agreed - while I know some people have found his non-traditional articles in the 2+2 magazine, well, um, non-traditional, I've found them likewise enjoyable and informative in a you-really-really-really-have-to-think-about-this kind of a way...
