I thought the substitution of X for Christ goes back to some old engligh bible known as the Chi-Ro bible where Chi and Ro are denoted by greek letters most similar to X and R in english. I'm pretty much grasping at straws from my intro to Art history class 4 years ago, so can anyone back me up here?

Allow me to outnit the nit here.

Xmas actually originated in Greek language as an abbreviation for X'temmas long before Christmas (or even the English language) existed. It's only in the last few decades that religious nuts decided it's some sort of conspiracy to take the "Christ" out of Christmas.

So merry Xmas, bitches.

And I'll outnitpick the nitpicker's outnitpicker: It's actually derived from the words Our Christ in Greek, which is Christe mas.

Even the wikipedia entry does not have the complete explanation! link
