Just try to get a new phone. IIRC AT&T/Cingular are switching many of their towers over to GSM, which means that you network actually IS degrading. You shouldn't have to get a new plan to get a new phone.

#2. A previous poster said T-Mobile has the same Network as Cingular. Cingular is in 98 of the top 100 markets, T-mobile isn't evenin 50.

[/ QUOTE ]

Cingular and T-Mobile do use the same network in California and NYC. Cingular doesn't own spectrum in NYC and T-Mobile doesn't own any in California, so they have a sharing agreement.

#1. ATT and Cingular use the same towers. Your level of reception WILL NOT increase from one company to another.

[/ QUOTE ]

You are brainwashed. They my use the same towers but there are at least 2 different systems on these towers.

ex. I know someone that swiched to Cingular from an AT&T plan and he now receives service in an area where he couldn't before.

ex. 2. If it was the same system way do you have to purchase a different phone?

Saying same towers isn't a lie but I believe that it is far from the truth. I will keep bugging the CSR's and 611 till I get a fair plan to change over.

Both AT&T and Cingular used to use TDMA. In the last few years they have both been transitioning to GSM. Right now both technologies are running on all Cingular and AT&T towers. FWIW, Cingular operates (mostly) 800MHz cellular networks (the bulk of their network is old-school BellSouth, SBC, and PacBell networks that have been around forever). AT&T is (mostly) newer 1900MHz PCS spectrum.

All new towers being put up will most likely only have GSM on them (technically if they are 800MHz towers they still have to have some minimal level of analog capacity as well, but that requirement will be phased out soon).

If you are an AT&T customer that still has a TDMA handset, Cingular is going to make you upgrade to a GSM handset if you want to change your plan.

If you are a Cingular customer that still has a TDMA handset, Cingular is going to make you upgrade to a GSM handset if you want to change your plan.

If you have a TDMA handset, expect your service to deteriorate as Cingular moves more and more of their capacity from TDMA to GSM. Eventually they'll just turn off the TDMA altogether.
