Default 3 More Hitchhikers

I used to give some of them rides years ago, but I haven't seen any in a while. The last few I saw didn't look like good bets so I went on by.

I've given rides to, and gotten rides from, some interesting people. Some nice, some not so nice.

Once I picked up a girl hitchhiker who seemed real nervous from the outset. She was silent and got freaked out as the road got more barren and desolate as we went along, and demanded to be let out of the car in the middle of a stretch of nothing. WTF. OK, well, hope you had a nice ride.

Once I picked up a girl hitchhiker with extremely mossy, totally gross-looking teeth who asked if I wanted a blowjob.

Once I picked up a true psycho with nicks and cuts all over his knuckles who said he beat up people for cash, and that he had recently plucked a guy's eyes out and dropped them right in his hand. Guess he thought I'd find that interesting.

I also hitched sometimes and have gotten rides from farmers, backwoods craftsmen, a few pretty women, and a fat gay tool-truck driver from ProvinceTown. I was 17 and going up to the White Mountains for some hiking. I didn't know he was gay 'til he asked if I wanted a blowjob as he dropped me off. I said "No" quite firmly and got the hell out of the truck. WTF.

In my early twenties my friends and I, on occasions when when we got a bit of the devil inside us, would slow down and stop for a hitchhiker, but like 100 yards ahead of him, and wave for him to come on and hurry up. He would run up to the car and just as he got near the door we would pull the car ahead a little bit. We would keep this up again and again as long as he would play. The last guy finally gave us the full finger with triple gusto a few times but of course we couldn't stop laughing. Ah what a cruel world it is. That was almost as fun as driving through town with my cousins when we were back in high school, in thick deep Ohio winter on Christmas vacation, and beaning the townsfolk with premade snowballs as we went past. We had the floorboard area down by the passenger side foot area all loaded up with about 50 snowballs. Yup those were the days. But now I rarely see hitchers, and they'd have to look pretty inoccuous before I'd pick them up.

Still, I don't see any reason like some people have to NEVER pick one up. Just use good judgment and if they set off warning bells as they are saying hi and about to get in, well sayonara. If they want a ride they gotta look and act decent. And they have to wear their seatbelt before the car will leave; that is more important than most would think, because if they are going to try something it is better that they are encumbered a bit too so they don't have as much advantage over you. You can even set down the rules before they get in: no smoking in the car and everyone who rides in the car has to wear their seatbelt. It's also a good thing psychologically to establish control of the situation from the outset. And then, like you have, Boris, you can meet some interesting people you'd never get to meet otherwise. ThaSaltCracka doesn't know what he's missing. But you know, Boris. The feeling of being free and roaming in the world and seeing the world, whether you are hitching, or picking up hitchhikers.

I've picked up a few hitchhikers and hitchhiked a few times myself. All in all I'd say that people who pick up hitchhikers are wierder than the hitchhikers themselves.

When I was hiking on the appalachian trail people picked up hitchhikers pretty regularly, the backpack lets people know they are hikers and safe. I always great appreciated rides, first time I was in the back of the trucks that have no cover on the back so you get the wind, pretty cold in April but fun. Also dangerous, some nurses I met on the trail wouldn't do it, they said it was too dangerous. I realize I need to clarify that... Dangerous because of the car gets into an accident the hitchiker will die if they're in the back of the truck.

Sorry I missed you back in Missoula. The guy from Hoopa confirmed that the fishing was good but then he passed out. I think he had a rough night. Also there was an article in the SF Chronicle a few weeks ago about how guides were hooking 70 steelies a day (yea right) on the Trinity so Hoopa might be a bit crowded.

Just wanted to say the girlfriend's grandfather was reportedly killed by a hitchhiker in the 70's. The police report technically leaves the case open but all signs point to a hitchhiker as wallet, jewlery, etc. were all gone, he had a propensity to pick up hitchers, and his death resulted from internal bleeding; he wasn't stabbed or shot or whatever and he was beaten along the side of the road.

I would never pick up a hitchhiker unless they were, as stated above, "nubile" 20-somethings from Eastern Europe and the significant other was nowhere to be found .

Sorry about your girl friend's father. To me though it doesn't make sense that a predator would choose his victims through hitch hiking. It's just too random and too risky. If anything the hitch hiker is taking a much greater risk than the person picking up the hitch hiker. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but as far as people we should fear, hitch hikers seem to me to be low on the list.

it was the grandfather. Pops is still alive and hanging with me in drinking contests.

It was never pinned on a hitchhiker specifically, he lives a long way out of town and travelled back and forth regularly. The police report ends assuming a hitchhicker was the culprit, but there were a couple of opportunities.

Nonetheless, I stick by the "nubile" requirement

I've only actually kicked out one hitch hiker. actually it was my sister who made the decision. My sister and I were driving to visit grandma. We picked up the guy and he started on a big praise Jesus sermon. My sister told him to shut up or get dropped off at the next exit. He chose to get dropped off.
