Default Re: Moving between limits - question for top players

I've never played above 5/10, but I think the reason is this:

Some people who play the big games like 25/50 are smart enough to realize that those games aren't always worth playing, so they will play 5/10 in the meantime.

Since 5/10 is your biggest game, you dont have to worry about dropping down for lack of action because there is basically always a good 5/10 game going.

Could you clarify according to which criteria you determine how a game is good ?

I play 5/10, 10/25, and 25/50 regularly. What I play is based on a combination of the following:

What games are going
How I have been running
How I have been playing
How I am feeling
How the games are playing
How good the games are
etc.

[/ QUOTE ]

I do the same thing, and adjust the # of tables I play accordingly also. Helps me not play my C game which I hate.

5/10 nl is still serious money. 4 Tabling it, it's not too difficult to pull in 400-450/hr.

[/ QUOTE ]

10 big blinds per table hour doesn't even seem fathomable to me, let alone not too difficult. Is that just the UB in me talking?

If Im down at 100 NL I would have a good reason, I try to play my A-game at whatever stakes I play.

Dont know what way to put it and Im not saying Im one of those solid players who plays 2/4 to 50/100 but Im saying if I would do this I would definately play my a-game. Just because the stakes are low I dont want to play bad poker.

I do alot jumping between levels. Some sessions 1/2nl some sessions 10/20nl. And even bigger scale in shorthanded fixed.
I just go with the feel and good table selection, often after waking up its hard to play A+ game so I start with 1/2nl, becuase I know basic ABC tight style will be at least a smaller winner long run and it gets things rolling for the day.
As well if im running I will play smaller untill my confidence is back to top and I feel ready to play bigger games again.

75 hands per hour x 4 x 8 PTBB/100 ($160/100) = $480/hour.

lmao.

if by 'not too difficult', you mean that only the top players in the game can do it over the long run, than i agree with you

Just keep track of netteller/whatever withdrawls. Much as I value pokertracker, I'd never count on it for tax purposes.

[/ QUOTE ]

taxes need to be paid on earnings, not withdrawls.

Yesterday I was sweating someone who was playing a sickeningly incredible 50/100 game, he regularly plays 5/10. As we were talking, I was thinking, this player's hourly rate at 5/10 is equivalent to the opening bet in this game. How can people possibly adjust to this. If I am used to making 3-400/hr in one game and now if I want to see a flop it is 3-400, after playing in that game for a while, how could I ever go back to 5/10 and take it seriously? Same thing goes for running good at 10/25 or 25/50, all of a sudden you are sitting at the table with a bankroll for your regular game. Makes it difficult to take seriously. Or being stuck a few buyins at the higher limits, all of a sudden the money you you are playing for at 5/10 feels insignificant.

I'm not saying I play any better/worse at each level, I strive to play as optimally as possible for a given game, it's conditions, players etc. This is more an aspect of the money.

After playing the big UB games, I have become numb to the swings at the normal 5/10. The same thing happened when I was at 2/4 after I played some 5/10, just not as bad. The money I win doesn't excite me as it once normally did, the money I lose doesn't depress me as much as it once did. When someone asks if I had a good day, I shrug, 4 months ago I would be beside myself with excitement. Conversely, if I previously dropped 5 buyins at 5/10 I would want to kill myself, now, I reload and don't even blink. I just feel like my brain is becoming warped to the amount of money I'm seeing exchanged back and forth. It's even worse when you jump out of the poker world, but that is a whole separate issue.
