Not sure about poorly. OP is marked with a big pair. AK is very unlikely for obvious reasons. He doesn't want to let him off an underpair that easily.

The way villian has played this hand, he seems showdown committed, but there are plenty of hands he will be more than happy to take a free showdown with where he is obligated to call a bet. This time he had KK, and played it quite poorly IMO. Don't worry about the outcomes so much, he played the hand weird and it worked out this time.
