What if the Yankees tie the Red Sox in the AL East?
Next Monday, the Yankees would host the Red Sox, unless those two teams would both make the playoffs anyway . In that case, there wouldn't be a playoff game. Both teams would make the playoffs and the first-place team is determined by the two teams' head-to-head record. As of Tuesday, the Yankees led the season series, 9-7. So if the Red Sox win 2 out of three, the Yankees will lead the series 10-9.

If cleveland wins 1 game or fewer, and the Red Sox take 2 out of three, then there is no playoff, the Yankees win the AL East, and the Red Sox win the Wild Card .

does anybody else think its stupid that if theres a 3way tie, the yanks and sox then have to play a game to determine the division winner? why cant they just determine the division the same way they would if there was not a 3way tie?

[/ QUOTE ]

no. First of all, if a playoff berth were at stake they'd play an extra game even if it was only a 2 way tie. Second, it's not fair to double a team's chances of missing the playoffs because of H2H record, in my opinion.

is it fair to cleveland that the yanks and sox would get 2 cracks at the playoffs? is it fair to the yanks/sox that they have to play a team with an extra games rest just because they (sox/yanks) were contending for a division title while the indiands were just wild card? i guess it cant be made fair. i guess these thing happen infrequently enough that it doesnt need fixing

The system is almost perfect. Assume that all three teams are evenly matched (not a terrible assumption since they all end up with the same record). Then the Red Sox and Yankees tie for their division and each earn 0.5 playoff spot. Cleveland is tied with EITHER the Red Sox OR the Yankees (it is improtant to note that it is not an evenly split three way tie) for the wild card which gives Cleveland 0.5 playfoo spot, the Red Sox 0.25 playoff spot (0.75 total), and the Yankees 0.25 playoff spot (0.75 total). If you assume that all teams have a 50/50 chance at winning play-in games, then the chance of each team making the playoffs are Yankees: 0.75, Red Sox: 0.75, and Cleveland: 0.5, which is exactly what they earned.

Yeah they did. It was awesome. Nothing big, just hugs and stuff. They should have prepared a big division champs dance routine.

It's just a division title. If they had over-celebrated, it would have looked weak.

I agree that a huge pile on would have been out of place. If they want to go nuts in the clubhouse and swim in champagne that's more than fine, its been a hell of a season and they just won the division. But onfield at Fenway isn't really called for, it's still only a division win for a team which has won it the last 7 years before.
