It's Look Good, Play Good, fwiw
Bob, the key is not to focus on results but on reasons. If you can't rationally explain the value of a play, then it should be examined until you either can validate that it is positive EV or realize it is negative EV (or that it is not hugely positive or negative). Factoring in pot odds, card odds and the specific players you are against makes it hard to do this. But I'd recommend continuing to post hands, discussing hands with a good poker buddy and running over hands in your mind until you are confident you are making +EV plays most of the time, and identifying your -EV plays consistently when you make a mistake. All of us tend to get over confident when we win and think we suck when we lose. Being able to rationally assess specific plays can keep you playing well through the ups and downs of luck. It's equally important to analyze plays when winning as when losing -- realizing when you made a -EV play and sucked out can help keep you from getting out of line and blowing back your hard-earned winnings. |
