Yes. In fact it has happened in online poker. Originally UltimateBet's first Aruba event was called the World Series of Online Poker. Pokerstars apparently had already (somehow) registered this as a trademark (with God knows who that UltimateBet would actually respect) along with the WCOOP that they do use and several others that they don't use. That is why Aruba is the Ultimate Poker Classic and not the World Series of Online Poker.

As a sidenote with the Super Bowl coming up, if you pay attention to American advertising, lots of companies do promotions tied in with the Super Bowl. If they are not an official Super Bowl sponsor they are not allowed to use the name "Super Bowl" and therefore you will see the "The Super Bowl" referred to as "The Big Game". "Get your big screen TV in time for The Big Game!".
