Bill, Scorsese started with Who's That Knocking at My Door? and Boxcar Bertha for his first two full-length fiction films. I've seen The Thin Red Line five or six times and like it more each time.
Why don't documentaries count? |

Seabiscuit, despite the annoying performance by William Macy, was an excellent film. The movie triggered a desire to read the book upon which it was based.
What a treat to find the Laura Hillenbrand penned book far surpasses the excellence of the film, especially the collectors edition containing many spectacular photos. |

Documentaries count, just not Spellbound or Winged Migration since they are 2002 movies, not 2003.
"Matchstick Men" was probably the best film I saw last year. |

The Last Samurai was very good - it was probably the best movie-watching experience I had. Afterwards, though, I thought about it, and it had some major flaws.
*****SPOILER ALERT******* 100 samurai ride into gatling gun fire and everyone dies. Everyone. Except Tom Cruise. And then, there's a lighthearted ending where the emperor rejects westernization to some extent. Umm, no. If 1)Tom Cruise would have died and 2) There was no happy ending then this would have been the best film of the year. Lost in Translation has no such flaws, and as a result would get my vote. Will |

I saw 21 Grams and think it belongs on the List.
I know many people didn't like 28 Days but I thought it was original and very scary and would add it too. I would also add, and recommend, Last Life in the Universe. It was made by a Thai director and stars a Thai woman and Japanese man. Masterfully filmed by Christopher Doyle (Quiet American, Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love), who I think is the best cinematographer currently working. KJS |

Seabiscuit was excellent IMO and it got me to read the book too. I liked Macy even though I came to understand that his character was sort of a movie represention of the overall press coverage.
Anyway, I'm posting because I thought you might enjoy listening to some of Seabiscuit's most famous races I haven't read all the posts in this thread but I'll put in a vote for Master and Commander. That also got me to read the book and now I wondered how I missed this Author. ~ Rick |
