I haven't played a lot of BJ recently, but haven't most casinos disallowed joining mid-shoe to prevent the "big player" strategy.

Some casinos have a limit on the action they will take on a mid-shoe entry (NYNY has a $200 limit on mid-shoe entry bets, for example). Others will shuffle up if you try to make a big bet (Monte Carlo did this to us when some friends of mine tried to make a $500 bet mid-shoe). Some I believe will still allow you to enter mid-shoe unscathed.
