You should maybe check your history to find our founding fathers thoughts on faith.

this was the quickest read on that subject that I could find. The Treaty of Tripoli passage probably is the broadest statement though.

Did you miss these links though?

Quotes of the Founders on Religion

Were the Founding Fathers Christians?

Under God Pro & Con

The last link shows a table which shows the conflicting statements of the founders on religion that they made. It is clear though that at best the majority were Deists who had a high regard for Jesus, though not necessarily believing Him to be what Christians do. It is also clear that the majority were not atheistic in their philosophy and beliefs like Thomas Paine was.

It's been a few years since I read a lot on the topic and I came away with the idea that they were quite independant cusses and that 'deist' would be my general take on them as a group average. I'm always surprised when that is morphed into them being followers of the christian religion. Like most people, even a lot of modern day atheists, they would have no problem living by the bulk of the principles that guide chhristians in a general way. Those are time-tested guidelines that have value in a social group.

Someone in a previous thread asked why atheists have such a need to evangelise with apparant 'bitterness'.

I think the frequency with which the phrase "in God we trust" appears around America explains one of my motivations for evangelising (is that a word?) atheism.

To try to convey to believers the problem with that message, try to imagine a hypothetical country which is the richest and most powerful in the world, but even the most intelligent and powerful people in that country swear by their analagous motto "In the magic 8-ball we trust".

Its a very very scary idea.

Most of the religious posters agree that you have to abandon logic to take the leap of faith (I think). The most powerful country in the world run by people who have abandoned logic? Scary. And worth some effort 'evangelising' to try to change it.

is "in god we trust" anyplace but on the money? i cant recall seeing it anywhere else.
if 95% of the earth believed in a magic 8 ball, why would anybody except the other 5% think it was very very scary?
