he actually doesn't have a huge salary right now. I think it's only a few hundred thousand/year.

This report is taken from a Globe story this morning, the Herald states that Epstein has not made a decision yet, and there is no official announcement on the sox website. I don't think this means anything yet.

Only when the results are good. The Los Angeles Clippers have retained their general manager for quite some time now.

I really don't know. On the one hand, he gets a lot of leeway here in Boston. Many fans have a hard time admitting that he could make a mistake, or that he's not God. Things like the Renteria signing, Suppan trade, and the endless parade of terrible relievers since he took over, none of these things get attention. Then there is the fact that he would be close to home here.

On the other hand, as you said, he's already won a World Series here; yes, he could go about securing a "legacy" akin to the Kraft/Belichick/Brady legacy in Foxboro. But, like Pedro, maybe he'd like to make his name somewhere else as well, to show he can do it on his own. Which brings me to the question of how much control does Theo really have in Boston? Most believe it's a shared thing; that it's not Theo, it's Theo and the Trio, or at least Lucchino looking over his shoulder giving yays and nays. If Theo does leave I think it will be because of that more than anything else.

The Boston media is ravenous regarding the Red Sox; the smallest morsel is stretched to the max by the feeding frenzy of hungry, amoral sharks bent on ripping every last shred from a story. You can't assume anything you read is true, as most of the sports "journalists" will print complete speculation when it moves them. Let the buyer beware.

<hijack>

A few friends and myself went to a Warriors/Clippers exhibition game several years ago at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. We got there pretty early, and Al Attles and Elgin Baylor were talking to each other in a pair of seats just in front of ours.

About five minutes later, these guys come by, and one of them says to Al/Elgin, "Excuse me, but you're in our seats." The HoFer and the NBA Championship winning coach say, "Excuse me...", get up and walk off. We were looking at each other, dumbfounded, but upon further reflection, maybe they were just Clipper fans...
