Re: Tim Duncan: \"Retarded\"
Would you be upset if say, Steve Nash or "Big Country" Reeves made this comment?

Re: Tim Duncan: \"Retarded\"
No, I wouldn't be upset if those "white dudes" you names said it. Nor am I upset that Duncan said it.
Duncan just needs to have the same accountabilty as any random white male would in the league. |

Re: Tim Duncan: \"Retarded\"
My point was that nobody would demand any accountability from a white guy if he made the same statement against the dress code.

[ QUOTE ] it's not the most appropriate thing to say, but it's hardly worth getting bent out of shape over. To imply that he gets a free pass because of his race is downright retarded. [/ QUOTE ] Neither of these comments are true. I'm not bent out of shape about this. I'm just very surprised that nobody has even mentioned his use of the word "retarded", and that it is totally inappropriate. Also, I never implied that he should get a free pass because he's black. I simply feel that if a white male of high rank in his respective field said something was retarded, he'd have h*** to pay, and would likely leave his position. So much for "equal treatment", eh? eh?? [/ QUOTE ] You are getting bent out of shape over the lack of outrage. And I didn't say you thought he should get a free pass, but that you think he is getting one. I guess I just don't see what the possibility of a "white male of high rank in his respective field" uttering a vaguely offense, yet commonly used term has to do with this. And I really doubt it would create the maelstrom that you think it would. While incorrect usage, it is extremely common. Edit: That wasn't you that said you use it. |

[/ QUOTE ] It IS extremely common... among teenagers who are not high-ranking, and not going on record. If a white guy said this, he'd be nailed with a firestorm. But since it's Tim "Perfect Ambassador to young African-American kids throughout the US" Duncan, the media will not focus on it at all. I guarantee you that several hundred American's were offended by his comment. Yet you WILL NOT hear about it because the media will protect him. It is not "equal treatment" among races. Don't sit here and imply that there is equal treatment among races because there is not. Remember how outraged the media was when Rodman called the Jazz fans "d*** mormons" a few years back? That is probably worse than Duncan's comments, but I'd be willing to bet there are more retarded people throughout the world than there are Mormons. |
