I don't understand how this guy was an "affiliate." It sounds like he operated his own gambling website (at least from the article), rather than the traditional definition we have of affiliates here, who are just those who advertise for gambling websites located offshore.

It's hard to tell, but the articles suggest that the guy was not running a site that placed bets, but referring people to a site that did. The article contained the following quote from an observer:
"This is not that much of an Internet gambling case because, first of all, he was not an operator," Catania said. "He's more or less an affiliate, and he was just bringing people to the site" |

Wasn't there mention of him actually taking cash from people for bets they wanted to place? I think this would be the big difference between his case and the average affiliate.

Well, this is why I might try and get a copy of the actual indictment. You just can't tell precisely what was really alleged from these articles.
