Speaking as someone who played B&M for 50plus hours a week from November to July and then switched to online, I can confirm, without a doubt, that online is tougher. If you can beat an online 2/4 game, you can compete at 20/40 live and dominate a 10/20 live game.
Players get board live and want to play more hands. You drag in more gamblers live; online takes a commitment with setting up accounts, working with software, etc. Many fish come to the casino expecting to lose some and does it matter if it's poker or craps or blackjack. Live players, fish especially, try to 'outplay' each other more often. More alcohol in live play. A spirit of gambooling is present in many live places. Tough not to catch the bug with slots, sports books, blackjack, etc. The games were definitely weaker at corresponding limits. I switched to online, so 1) Reduce risk in my risk/reward ratio. Multi-tabling allows just as much profit potential as bigger limits, but provides a bigger sample to get it, reducing variance. 2) Got weary of traveling and driving to work everyday. I don't live that close to casinos. It was fun, but a pain. 3) Good way to get in many more hands and get better quicker in the long-run. I'd rather get the experience of playing 50k hands a month and be better down the road. 4) Convenience. Check e-mail, watch the ball game, post on 2+2 etc when on break. |

I'll condense my analysis a bit and oversimplify things. Basically there is a certain type of fish found in B/M not found online. Online players are of two sorts: 1) Smart 2) Stupid B/M players are of three sorts: a) Smart b) Stupid c) Too Stupid to operate a PC. Hope this helps. [/ QUOTE ] Throw in nanolimits and it's even more clear. |

That's prolly true, so related question:
Do you think the further expansion of poker sites into gambling sites (i.e. change at Party, Paradise being bought by SportsBook) will help bring in more consistent gambler traffic a la the B&M's? |

is this due to all the online pros? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, online games are very tough compared to B&M games. Here are some stats from my Party Poker Database: $20/$40 - 2.8 see the flop on average at a 10-handed(8.8 players on average) table $30/$60 - 2.6 see the flop on average at a 10-handed(8.8 players on average) table P.S. ASF% != VPIP. |

i have heard this several times lately..are online games as a whole tougher than B&M? doesn't seem like this should be true. is this due to all the online pros? (5-10 up to 40-80) [/ QUOTE ] It's also due to the "mutlti-table shark multiplier effect". Most winning players, pro or semi-pro, multi-table. Most losing players play one, or at most two tables (it' hard to play more than two tables when you see 75% of your flops). This skews the shark:fish ratio towards the shards. In B&M cardrooms, the sharks are limited to playing one table. |

Many online $5/$10 players have worked their way up from the micro limits and have years more table hours than B&M players.
B&M $5/$10 players are playing that limit "because everyone calls at $2/$4 and my good hands never hold up" and they think that's a bad thing. Or the $2/$4 list was too long. |
