The pot size is what makes this check significantly better than betting IMO.

SB almost never has a calling hand when he stops betting the turn here. When he discovers hero hasn't either he wakes up again and takes a stab on the river. This is the scenario much of the time. Another scenario is that he may now call hero's river bet with very little, K or Q high. The times he will get drawn out on is very small and when it does happen you did not lose a big pot you could have protected.

When the pot is small your opponent calling is a much more amplified mistake. That's why I think betting is significantly better than checking.

I really don't think this is always true.

Hero also might get called by K or Q high on the turn.

Very true but this is the exact reason a decent opponent he is not calling without some sort of made hand as he has no odds to draw. When he checks the flop he pretty much tells you he doesn't have a made hand. This is how I will usually play in the SB anyway. A/K/Q I will bet or check/fold in this situation.

If hero is up against a calling station bet is probably better but against all others I prefer check. Against an aggressive opponent I think checking is better by a large margin.

SB bet the flop. And we have no reason to believe that SB is a decent player.

What do people think about raising the flop here?

I prefer a flop raise, followed usually by a turn bet and river check, depending on the board. How is this line?

I generally raise the flop here a lot, but I've still been dealing with steal situations postflop and oscillating widely, so I don't know.
