Under no circumnstances would I bet this hand on 4th-6th, and even if I made trip 6s on the river I probably wouldn't bet 7th, just because the pot's so small there's nothing to fight over.

Your reasoning is very flawed. The size of the pot doesn't have anything to do with betting trip 6s here on the river. A bet is for value: any two pair hand will call, as will many pairs.

In stud8, check/calling 7th with trips is often a reasonable line, as you often face a made low who will bet/raise a rivered straight or flush. This is very different situation.

I just let this one go without really thinking about it, someones bound to call with a somewhat large pair not wanting to let half the pot go.
