Good advice here generally. Just chiming in to say that you probably got a pretty decent lesson for your $80. Review the session carefully, examining every play -- I bet there's a lot to learn there.

These are all holdem basics, i don't think they're HU specific.

They are but it's the extent to which you do them that matters.

a couple of tips from my experience that cover common mistakes i try to capitalize off of.

--almost everyone folds too much when they first start playing HU. kind of like almost everyone plays too loose when they first start playing ring.

--virtually every hand is playable on the button.

--pot odds are your god.

--often times the deciison to fold or not is on the turn. (if you call the turn w/a made hand you're calling the river almost 100% of the time.)

--w/good, not great hands in position do a lot of turn raising to get free showdowns on the river.

--the river is the money street HU. the combo decision of making the right value bets and inducing bluffs is extremely fluid and where most of the advantage can be gained against decent players.

--3 bet a lot of flops w/top pair/weak kicker, especially when a draw is out there. charging people on draws the max frustrates opponents a ton!

--don't get sassy w/ur draws against opponents who don't fold. why turn raise semibluff w/out any fold equity? same w/flop raise semibluffing to a smaller degree.

--if opponents raise a lot preflop you have to 3 bet them often. it will slow 'em down! also, if an opponent doesn't react well to getting 3 bet preflop, that alone should give you enuf edge to beat them.

--most opponents get lazy w/their speed of betting intervals headsup. figure out what they mean, and don't give anything away yourself. also, sometimes just playing slower is enuf to throw an opponnet who likes to play fast off of their game.

bet your hands that can't win. if the flop is K72 and you have an A8 you have options cause your hand has some value. but if the flop is K72 and you have 36 you usually have to bet, cause it's the only chance you have of winning the hand. also, it's usually worth it to try bluffing on the river w/your worst hands. getting a jack high to fold to your 6 high is a huge part of HU.
