[ QUOTE ]
My two experiences with metal in the microwave: 1) My dad brought home Arby's for dinner, and he microwaved the sandwiches while still in the tin foil (idiot!). There was fire, and then a fire extinguiser, and then no fire. 2) My dad put hot dog buns in the microwave, while still in the bag with a twist-tie (idiot!). There was fire, then a glass of water, and then no fire. [/ QUOTE ] Your old man sounds smart... Wendy's screwed me once though when they wrapped the foil part on the inside and I threw the sandwich in the microwave. |

Im pretty sure they did a segment on this on the show Myth Busters.
If my memory serves me, if you just put a spoon in the microwave, nothing really happens. If you put a fork or a crinkled piece of tinfoil in there, you'll get arcs. So basically anything smooth will not really do anything, but if you have something that is uneven or hilly, you'll get sparks. The superheating of the water only works on distilled water if im not mistaken. I think its because theres no impurities in the water so when it heats up so quickly theres nothing to break the H20 chains. If you were to stick your finger in a superheated cup of distilled water, it would explode. PS. try putting grapes in the microwave |

[/ QUOTE ] when i was 18 (when microwaves were relatively new), i too got burned by a wendy's wrapper torching my microwave. you would think in 30 years they would have had enough complaints to switch to paper. anyway, Mythbusters (discovery channel) had a microwave segment and the only thing close to an explosion was crumpled foil which created arcing like lil_o said. http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/my...pisode_08.html |
