It's going to be difficult for people to become interested in stud by watching this event. But I don't find Limit Holdem that much fun to watch either. Maybe if they started having no limit stud events people would find stud more interesting to play and to watch.

I didn't catch the start of the show: does anyone know if the guy named Sexton is related to Mike Sexton (the WPT announcer and poker pro with the same name)?

One thing i noticed was a few (imo) loose river calls- Awada called with unimproved nines, in a hand that i would see as a clear fold, even given the antes. am i missing something?

He clearly had his opponent on a flush draw, but even so, there were overcards on his opponents board and he had raised on third...

didn't his opponent have an open pair too? I think he had pocket Kings and raised 3rd and then made a pair of 8s on board and awada called him down with unimproved 9s.

After watching the event I must conclude
1)poker on tv blows
2)hype blows, poker on tv = hype
3)announcers blow
4)dumbed down entertainment blows
5)If producers gave themerkin people some credit for being nonbraindead shows based or loosely based on nonficticious events might not blow so hard.

Oof. The very idea of no-limit stud makes my colon pucker.

It's been a joke (not really a ha ha joke anymore) of mine for some time now. I'm not sure if it was the 2000 elections, the 2004 elections (which, me living in New Hampshire at the time meant late 2002) or the lead up to Gulf 2 the sequel. I started doing impressions of Bush2, and this was one of the phrases that came out. Another one is "We don't harbor tourists."(still ha ha funny) His accent is so great because it contains all of the habits of New England with a, perhaps, artificial Texas twang.

Why would TV producers give the American people credit for being non-brain-dead? And would you want to market to intelligent people (~8 people) or the rest of us (~300 million people)?

there is a noted quote

No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. -- H.L. Mencken

this quote says one of two things either(or maybe both)
1) the American people are stupid, or
2) the American people don't care if they are dumbed down to.

I happen to believe it is the latter. It is not so much that people are stupid, but they just don't mind being treated as such. But this can only go so far (in theory).

People DO like content, and people DO like thought provoking material, they are, however, willing to settle for less, or even nothing. The American people are eager to think their fellow Americans are idiots and, since Americans love thinking of themselves as "average" or "middle class" or any other form of normalcy (while still being different of course) despite any indications to the contrary they like material that they think is fit for their neighbors. Which means there is a self perpetuating crappiness of all media. Demand more and you will get more. Genius is cheap in this country and in the world. I know because I test as such and spend my time playing low and mid limit poker. Nearly everyone who posts here is if not well above than approaching genius. And poker players make up a minority of the genius in this country and in the world. It is easy to call other people donkeys when we all make donkey plays from time to time, we just remeber THEIR donkey plays but give reasons for our own.

Rant over
