Simple. Because the government takes a big chunk out of the multi-billion dollar porn industry. Non-documented prostitution is a massive industry, and far too easy to evade taxes without documented video footage.

How is paying a girl to be in a porn video different from paying a prostitute. I mean, if prostitution is illegal in say California, how is shooting a hardcore porn video not?

Just curious if anyone knows...

Not that I'm looking to shoot a "hardcore porn video" or anything in the future. Yeah...

In most cities, it isn't illegal to take money for sex. What's illegal is to "solicit" sex for money. In porn, I think they're technically getting paid to appear in the "movie", they're not getting paid for the sex per se.

the only odd thing i know about prostition is that if you sell yoruself as a "professional masseuse" and do not have a license, they (the law) hit you harder than if you were merely soliciting as a prostitute.

practicing massage therapy (although the massage is more often than not left out) without a licesnse to do so is apparently a high crime.

That's "operating a common bawdy house", which is much worse. The law is meant to prevent brothels, and it doesn't distinguish between a brothel and a massage parlour.
