Fellow Austinite here, i've also been considering the trip up there or LA. Thanks for giving me a little more to go on. As it is now, I think it's cheaper to fly Southwest Air to Vegas when they run their specials. But if the games are as soft as you say...

did you see any motel/hotels near the casino?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, the games are soft. You'd have to play pretty high though to make it worth a trip by itself I would think. There is a Microtel right next to the casino that I THINK is affiliated with the casino. You may or may not get some kind of casino or poker room rate, I dunno.

I've played the 5/10 $1000 NL game there, and it was sufficiently soft. I don't go up there much since i'm in Norman (108 miles away), but when I go back home to Texas sometimes I stop there.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 10% rake up to $5 AND the dollar they drop on every hand for the "bad beat jackpot", which is not increased even close to a dollar for every hand they deal. I remember the first time I open raised on the button there (playing limit), and stole the blinds. The dealer dropped the dollar when there was no freaking flop. I protested and she told me that was the rule. All of the Oklahoma casinos drop the dollar in addition to rake, and they all used to rake $5. A couple have changed it to $3 since then, so hopefully Winstar and the others will follow suit. I think most of them have stopped dropping the dollar when there is no flop, but I'm not sure. 90% of the dealers in oklahoma casinos are awful. I almost made a post about this one particular session I had at thunderbird:
ridiculous true story alert
I was playing 2/5 NL one night when they had just started dealing poker. (They hadn't established a max buy in yet....some guys would sit with $3000 in a 2/5 blind game.) I don't chop, and all folded to me in the small blind with KK. I had about $700. After I'd looked at my cards, the dealer started asking me if I wanted to chop and was almost insistant upon it. As I recall he was like, "Chop? chop? do you want to chop? huh? chop it? chop????" I said no, a little taken back by how weird he was being about it. I ended up doubling up the big blind that hand in a $1200 pot. I won't write out the hand since this isn't a bad beat story, but he flopped the nut straight with 35 (I didn't just complete, i DID raise preflop), and the dealer says to me, "Thats why you chop."
If I had my wits about me at that moment I would have called the floor, but I was a little upset about the hand and didnt have much live experience yet, so i just got up for a few hands.
Later that night, same table, different dealer:
I flop a set of 2s and end up all-in heads up on the flop. Other player gets pissed off that I flop a set, throws his cards in the muck in anger, and then retrieves them himself and puts them by his side while the dealer does nothing. He said he still had 2 outs as he did this. I almost wish he had hit one of them so I could have gone berserk on him and the floor and make his winning hand dead. The guy was a huge jerk. Then, i asked to see what his cards were and he wouldnt show them to me. Then he tossed them to the dealer face down and i told the dealer to show me. He didn't do anything. I insisted, and he had this dumbfounded look on his face, like, "I have no idea how to handle this situation." He said something like, "If he doesnt want to show, I dont think he has to", and he shuffled them up, really slowly. Never saw them.
LOL, I dont even remember what the point of this post was 'cause now I'm all stirred up about those hands.

Yeah I went yesterday and asked Emmitt (the big floor guy) about the new room and he said they have delayed the opening. First estimates put it at opening in mid oct. (like right now) but they have pushed that back to the beginning of january. They will have 60ish tables and they will spread NLHE, LHE, PLO, O/8, stud, stud hi/lo, and 2-7 3 draw.... or so he says. I wont know till I show down my first nut low against a T8643, but needless to say Im excited about it.

My buddy said he was playing at Fire Lake near Shawnee, OK. the other day. He said once he walked for a while to have a smoke and when he came back he had missed his blinds so he just waited to come in on his big blind. When he tried to come in on his big blind the dealer told him he had to post both big and small blinds at this time and then post another small next hand. Dealer called over the floor who said yes that's the rule. Everyone at the table was saying Bullsh--. The manager looked up the rule and it stated that a players options were to post both blinds or wait until it's their big blind and come in on the big blind. This moron couldn't understand what he was reading or just didn't want to admit he didn't know what he was talking about and stuck by his ruling. Typical 21 year old know it all. My buddy (10+ year dealer) told me the next day "those are some of the dumbest people I have ever encountered. He moved there from Vegas just a couple months ago to deal cards and now he's not sure if he can work for these idiots. He said they also drop the jackpot $1 without even a flop. That doesn't seem right to me. If there is no flop then there is no chance of winning the jackpot. Sounds a little shady to me. Typical backwards Oklahoma thinking.

kantu-

it's about 4:00 from Austin, going through Ft. Worth at non-rush hour times.

More like 5 hours from Austin accounting for a stop to piss.

About 30/45 minutes north of Denton. Always go use 35W if you can.

From DFW airport? 1.5 - 2 hours.
