I consider Stella, like Hoeggardan, "Belgian" beer. I mean, it's from belgium, but in reality, Stella is not unlike many other crisp tasting beers. Trappist beers are a completely different category, and quality.

giving either of these beers as an example of great Belgium beer is like giving Chicken Parm as a great example of Italian food.

I'm not a huge fan of this style anymore, but when I used to love it, Allagash White was always my favorite.

If you've looked up info on their website, they should have a page that says who their US distributors are, and maybe what types they export. Call up the distributor for your region and ask.

Leffe is not even close to a white beer.

I also hate Hoegaarden.

Stella is my favorite among lagers.

Leffe is a heavy beer, but not "trappist". There are only seven beers in Belgium that can carry that name, they have to live up to all kinds of standards, not in the last being brewed by real live monks (yeah, i know...).

Anyway, my favorites are Westmalle Triple and Orval.

Edit: with regard to distributors: Hoegaarden, Leffe and Stella are all brewed and distributed by Interbrew (worldwide).
