Aaron, are you saying waiting until the turn (to protect a hand) is most applicable only in large pots?

Since 'protecting' a hand on the flop is impossible given the pot vs bet sizes?

Yes, that's precisely what I'm saying. See SSH for these quotes (pp 160-161):

"Sometimes, a flop raise will not protect your hand. When these situations occur, you should often just call on the flop... This is especially true when the pot is large, and a lot of fourth street cards might cripple your hand."

"You should often wait for the trn in these situations as well:
1) When the flop bet comes from your left.
2) When the pot is extremely large."

Notice that pot size is mentioned in two of the three situations explicitly, and in the last case, the pot is implicitly large (flop bet from you left implies a bunch of callers in between you and the bettor).

Also notice that checking with the intent of giving up a free card will *never* protect your hand (checking with the intent to check-raise is a different story).

I think more importantly you have to be able to face the field with calling 2BB on the turn. In this case, the better is on your left, so on the turn, they are going to call his bet, and your raise is not pushing anyone out. So I don't think hand is a great example.

PREFLOP: Fold

FLOP: Bet.

TURN: Ugly. Probably bet and fold to a raise or checkraise.

What was the continuation and result?
