Default Re: How would you play this hand preflop?

Depending on my opponents and my table image, I push here a good amount of the time.

Otherwise I call.

I'm not folding.

What hand is going to call an all-in that you can beat? Fold seems pretty easy to me.

The only other plausible move to me, is a re-raise to 1400-1600, fold to an all in.. Bet 1000-1200 no matter what hits the flop.. Give it up if there's players.

I think All-in or Call are your worst two options.

I would rather call AND/OR push with 8-9 suited than push with A-Q here.

With a push, either hand you are only going to get called by hands that can beat A-Q. With 8-9 atleast you have live cards capable of making something.

What range of hands do you think your opponents call here with?

Hand 2: 65.6376 % [ 00.65 00.01 ] { AA-TT, AKs, AKo }

I can't find a range of premium hands where 98s outperforms AQs in the equity department.

What these numbers don't say is that since there's an A and a Q in your hand already, your opponents are more likely to have a hand not in this range (IE, a hand they will fold) and therefore you have more FE against basically any range of hands than you would have if you held 98s.

But I do agree, either calling or pushing with 98s is definitely an option depending on my opponents and table image. But I would definitely not say that I favor pushing here with 98s to pushing with AQs, I can't see the logic in that.

You would rather have 89 suited than AQ suited? What advantage does 89 suited have over AQ suited? If you flop a pair you still don't know where you are, and if you flop 2 cards to your flush I would rather be hoding the nut flush, not the 9 high flush. Yeah you might have a better straight possibility, but there are only a few hands the MP has that has you dominated. I say call the 600 at better than 3 to 1 odds and see what the flop brings.

Well it depends on your opponents.

Some opponents will call an all-in here with AJ, AT.

If one of our opponents calls with JJ and the other folds, I would argue that is certainly a better situation for us overall than taking a flop when our opponent has position and initiative. We get to play a coinflip with a good bit of dead money in the pot, which is sweet. In addition, JJ will outflop us 2/3 of the time but will only have us beat at the end 50% of the time.

But let's say both of our opponents fold and one of them held 99 or 88. Then our push is hugely +EV, as not only did we not have to take a flop OOP without initiative where we are going to be behind 2/3 of the time, we also stole our opponent's 50% share of the final pot.

It all really depends on your opponents' range of opening hands as well as the hands he will call a push with. But with little knowledge of those factors, we can still estimate that it is a +EV move overall.

Save the voodoo calculator for the cash forum.. This is tournament poker.

A tight player might chuck their 10-10 or J-J to an all-in.

It's also more likely he's holding A-K

I wouldn't make the push at all, but if a tight player makes a preflop raise.. I put him on A-A, K-K, Q-Q, A-K and my A-Q is worthless.

Here is my problem with this hand. I might push with this hand to put a sort of squeeze play on them both, but I have an inkling that MP has a good hand. I mean he bet a 1/4 of his stack on this hand so Im hoping to hit it big or fold it. Just call and hope you flop the nut flush draw, or twopair etc. Go for the gold and don't be afraid to take some chances.

Flopping two pair is an easy push.

I'm not saying I call raises with suited connecters!

I'm just saying A-Q is a horrible hand to be pushing, or playing a big pot out of position with.

My best options in order:

#1 Fold,
#2 Raise to 1500, Fold to a re-raise, Bet 5 BB at any flop, give it up if you get called or raised.
#3 All-in.
#4 Call.

You're bringing Cash Game EV plays into a tournament again.

Good luck winning all those coinflips with "dead money" in the pot. I'm sure the day you hit your 7 or 8 coinflips you'll win a tournament!
