If a person was making their living entirely from poker, shouldn't a large enough bankroll negate most of the bad effects of playing a higher variance game?

Also, I confess that I don't have much live experience in a casino. But the consensus seems to be that the games are softer. Shouldn't someone be able to beat it for $30(1.5 BBs)/hour even after the rake and dealer tokes? It's an honest question, because I admit that I'm mostly ignorant of such things.

Trying to answer the question:

The definition of "High Stakes Poker" is completely abritrary and subjective. To most people, it just depends on how much money you have. To professional players, I think it marks a dividing line between strategic styles. By this definition, the mid limits are somewhat tight, but the high stakes are also tight but are differentiated by being significantly tougher, more aggressive and tricky, with generally better hand reading skills.

By this definition, high stakes does start lower online. Others have suggested that high stakes begins at 30/60 offline, and at 15/30 online. This would probably make 5/10 online a mid-limit game, whereas offline it is small stakes.

However, these are all completely arbitrary distinctions – it really doesn’t matter or really mean much at all.

this is so true I played B&M two full years in 1994-1995. I made $27 an hour playing $10-20 and $33 at $15-30 LHE. I make more now hourly playing $3-6 and $5-10 LHE then I did grinding out those limits and my earn is much more consistent with smaller swings. I aslo win ~80% of my playing days vs. 67% playing B&M.

$5-10 thu online in general plays like $20-40 B&M game.

I think 5/10 is low limit. To the poster who said you can one table 10/20, and make a comfortable living, you must be joking. I can't see that happening in this country, maybe sub-saharan Africa.

wow. is this just a none-too-subtle way of bragging about your salary/earnings? if so, good for you dude.
even 1 bb hour at 10-20 40 hours a week is the equivalent of a superflexible $40,000/year job (albeit w/no benefits). avg income in the US ain't $40,000 and most people work more than 40 hours.

also, why does it seem unrealistic for an online player to earn 1.5 bb/hour playing 10/20 (especially shorthanded)?
there are so many multi-tabling specialists on here i think folks forget that you can actually increase your individual table results by focusing on 1 table.
