I knew that someone would think I was a tool or a duechebag or something, and that's fine. I generally find people who are being a nit and trying to shoot an angle tools and dueches as well. However, I was OUT of this hand, so that's not at all the case. And my point about "raising one white chip at a time" was simply to make a point of how ridiculous the ruling was. And I really think that's what made him re-check his ruling, so while I kind of felt dick-ish saying it, it probably helped get the situation straight.

To the dissenters, this guy was NOT moving stacks and stacks of 20 chips into the pot, which I could see being allowed because of what you mentioned. It took him 4 motions to bring 15 chips into the pot. And there were (however slight) pauses in between each move, as if he was calculating while making his moves. I don't even think he was shooting at all, he just didn't know. And, IMO, it was a CLEAR string-raise.

The point you are missing is that something that would be a string raise in limit poker is often a completely valid way to bet in NL.

Having said that, it's always easiest to avoid any confusion by moving in your chips in one motion or declaring the amount.

What about the ethic of getting involved when you are not in the hand?
While this may be an exception as you mentioned your righteous motivation to school the new poker room, this kind of action invariably gets under my skin.

In live no limit a player must bet in a continuous motion. Contrast with with limit where he must bet in a single motion. The TDA made a rule for tournaments that says you can go back for the raise amount once after stating raise because most people playing tournaments are like the original poster and are unaware of no limit procedures.

I'm guessing there was almost ZERO doubt from anyone around you (players, dealer, floor) that you were 'really really' pissed off about this.

Looking to the other guy and saying 'apology accepted' is REALLY freaking rude.
Just sitting there and continuing to 'bitch' about it is kind of pointless imo even IF you are just trying to clarify the rules for your own play in the future.

There's nothing more annoying then someone at the table who just refuses to LET IT GO.
It's how personal confrontations and actual fights get started at the table.


Whether you were right or not it sounds very much to me like you were being the jackass.

Seriously...most people are there to have fun...and this is how you want it since people will tend to play a bit looser when they are enjoying themselves.


Acting like you know it all just isn't going to get you anywhere. Again, it doesn't even matter if you really DO know it all....nobody is going to believe you anyway.

Personally, i like the strategy of being humble and acting like I don't know a damn thing.
When I win a hand I fully admit to how lucky I was if someone wants to point it out to me. I NEVER point out how many outs I had or anything like that.
I couldn't care less if they're trying to insult me by calling me lucky.

On a not-so realated topic - I played at the Gold Strike, Tunica tournaments the past couple of weeks and was VERY impressed with how the dealers enforced the string-raise rule.
Anything that was even close was immediately flagged as a string-raise and was disallowed by the dealer.
they didn't leave it up to the players to point it out.
There was one play where I specifically told the dealer that she made a good ruling and that I was pretty impressed.
They also enforce the rules rather politely too (making sure that the player who was probably clueless realizes that it's just something they have to do).
They were really pretty damn sharp from what I observed.

While you were correct, I think you overreacted somewhat, especially being out of the hand. I'm guessing that you weren't pointing this out in the most friendly, "oops you made a mistake" manner.

How long have they been offereing NL at PM? I play there every couple weeks when I'm in town and haven't seen it yet. What limits, what's the buy-in, etc. Anyone with info (OP) that could enlighten me would be cool.
