I would think that cold calling would be fine if you had a drawing type hand with good odds and your fold equity was rather low. Is the book written from a Limit or NL perspective?

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. I didn't say never call, I said never call without an excellent reason.

The dangerous thing is to call when you're not sure if you should fold or raise. There are times in poker when you're not sure what to do, those are not the times to call.

According to the book I'm reading, it's rarely correct to call a raise before the flop in hold-em; you should usually either raise or fold. But there are a very few hands where the book does recommend a "cold call." My question: is there a theoretical basis for cold calling with certain hands, or is it "just because?"

Depends on the book... If you're reading Small Stakes Hold 'em, for now, "just because" should work fine.

Except on the river in a large pot. (Hint: Don't fold)
