Re: The Psychology of Poker by Dr. Al
Dr Al, I have said it before and I will say it again. Your book ROCKS and we are lucky to have a guy like you here at the forum.
Your book and Feeny's book are must owns, not just must read but must own and it is not even close. I found your book to be extremely helpful and I was lucky to read them in the correct order, it is POP first if you are a newbie then ITPM. Both have the steamboatin seal of approval. |

I read POP, then ITPM. This is the correct order. Both are excellent books, and both are must reads.

[ QUOTE ] If you are an advanced player, you should buy ITPM, not POP. I must point out that not many authors tell people "don't buy my book." One of the greatest weaknesses of most poker literature is that it does not have a clearly defined target audience. I have read many statements that a book will help everyone from the beginner to the expert. That is utter, absolute BS. [/ QUOTE ] Respect to you, sir. [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: The Psychology of Poker by Dr. Al
Hi all,
if you are interested in reading a book about facing the psychologial traps of dealing with uncertain outcomes and/or random walk events with a positive drift I can recommend "Trading in Zone". The book is not about poker but most of the concepts seem to be valid in poker and trading. I am a new to poker (but not new to trading) and found that the concepts to apply are surprisingly similar except that the markets do not force you to make decisions which makes poker the easier game (maybe...). I didn't get much from this book at all. Inside The Poker Mind is much better IMO. [/ QUOTE ] If you were semi-conscious during the 80's or have spent 5 minutes in California you can pass on POP. |

Re: The Psychology of Poker by Dr. Al
I think the discussions of why people play poker is worth it even if you don't ever apply it to anyone but yourself.
I had never really asked myself why I play poker and when I did I realized that a significant portion of my desire to play comes from a desire to prove that I'm better/smarter than other people. This led me to try to put on fancy plays in games where people just aren't paying enough attention to make it worth it. I cut down on that, and I'm doing better than before. What is ITPM going to teach me? |

Re: The Psychology of Poker by Dr. Al
Thank you for clarifying that. POP helped me quite a bit, but I didn't see the need for 2 psych books.
I look forward to reading ITPM and your forthcoming book now. |

Re: The Psychology of Poker by Dr. Al
It will do exactly what the title says. It will take you inside the mind of a pro poker player and explain what He is thinking about while He plays. It will also explain common mistakes made by good players and why they make them.
BY page 27, I had found a ton of mistakes in my game and ITPM has paid for itself numerous times over. If you have any ambition toward moving up in stakes, ITPM is a must own. |
