Isn't that the point of the away message? To let people know why you're away?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm pretty sure there is no logical point to away messages.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nah, not true. I put them up if there's a few people that I want to let know where I am, etc.

If I could use AIM during the day (blocked at work), I'd put up messages like, "Hang on...taking a dump." Then change it 5 minutes later to "Wiping--almost done!"

Of course, my mom knows my screen name, so I'd be in trouble. Even though I'm in my mid-30's.

WOW, what's the big F'ing deal? I have absolutely no problem if someone says what they're doing in his awas message. For the record, I've never used a non-default away message, but I really don't see how it's something to get upset over.

I have an away message up almost all the time. GAIM and Trillian allow you to hold conversations while you're away, so I just keep mine up so I can talk to whoever I want to while avoiding people I don't care to, it's like screening calls. Plus I don't like to bother with putting one up and taking it down all the time. Mine are always knee slappingly funny though.

exactly. and mine are always damn hilarious too

My pet peeve is going over to peoples houses and seeing how many people they have on their buddy list, and waiting around for them to check every single persons away message. They don't even talk to 9/10ths of the people on their list.

My list has 36 people on it. If I don't talk to you in a while, you're off the list.

well, you do see the little away sign next to their name. you don't have to look at the details of their away message. .

i can understand it being a pet peeve. but for me i don't see it as a big deal. i know i catch myself doing weird things no one cares about for my own little weird reasons.

also, i like details.

although i agree with miajags post, that one is pretty stupid. i can't think of a reason to stay logged in if you really don't want to be bothered.
