Re: Adoption and Poker
adoption agencies each have their own criteria since they are private enterprises. i'm pretty sure this gambling income may be considered a negative in some agencies' eyes, but if you have enough positives to offset the negatives, it shouldn't prevent you from adopting.
have you and your wife considered adopting embryos? the only agency you have to deal with there is the doctor who extracted them. the only cost involved is for the drugs your wife would need to take, the doctor fee for the procedure, and the hospital fee. all this adds up to close to 10K, but if you have insurance, you are about 50/50 to get the drugs paid for, which is the biggest expense. actually, if you were to go this route, i have a lot of it i'll give you(yes, still in sealed vials and good 'till 2008 or something). good luck! |

[/ QUOTE ] It's just seems so arbitrary. I would say if you looked at our portfolio there would be more positives: steady job (for both) large home stable families infertility issues no criminal background no health issues I would hate to see my hobby screw this up because i get sterotyped as a gambler.... Re: Adoption and Poker
[ QUOTE ]
it looks like if you hit a $1200 "jackpot" the casino files paperwork with the IRS. Obviously we don't have that. [/ QUOTE ] yes...this is what happens. However, the adoption agency may very likely NOT know that...and/or they might not look for it anyway. Seriously, how often do they run into somebody that files winning on their gambling taxes? They are just normal people doing typical background investigative work...so we can assume that normal people probably don't know that $1200 is the cut-off for the IRS to be notified (most people don't know this). As i recall...you are somewhere in central or eastern Tenn. Thus you aren't really near any casinos so this wouldn't be as commonly known as it might be if you lived in AC or LV. I think you should still consider the idea that you went to Tunica (or someplace) for a 3 day mini-vacation and 'hit it big'. Obviously this is a bit of a risk as they would certainly shoot you down if they figured out you were lying. But I also suspect that the chances of them shooting you down if you tell the truth are pretty high also (possibly higher...thus the potential +EV of lying about it and hoping to pull it off). These are just some ideas...I know nothing about adoptions nor the agencies involved...and I certainly don't know anything about the people that will be analyzing your background. good luck. |

Yay for me However, there is a cardroom here in town. Sarge[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] |

Re: Adoption and Poker
Good luck to you sir! My two cents is if they ask just brush it off just saying something like you got lucky on a trip with the boys.

Re: Adoption and Poker
I think you should just tell them that you are a very skilled poker player and you have collected a nice amount of winnings from that.Tell them it is a hobby that has turned into a nice way to get some extra money. Play dumb to the fact that they would think playing poker is less than favorable.
I just think getting caught in some kind of cover up would be worse to your situation than playing poker ever could be. Thats just me though, I am sure saying you won a jackpot would work too..I just prefer the honesty method |

Acutally Washington state. [/ QUOTE ] Oh. well... tomato/toe-mah-toh. good luck with whatever approach you take. not to pry or anything....but the amount that you reported on your taxes could be a factor too. If you reported $5k or so i think you could brush it off more easily. If you reported $25k or more that might be tougher. Not to make further assumptions (since I was only a few thousand miles off regarding your residency) but I believe you were mostly a 3/6 player last I knew...so I'm assuming your reported winning's aren't TOO extreme. |

Re: Adoption and Poker
ESPN, ESPN2, Celebrity Poker, WPT, PP commercials on several channels.
Poker is mainstream now. If they turn down anyone that has ever played holdem that would be a huge portion of the population. Simply say you played once or twice and hit it big. DOn't mention the internet unless asked. |

Re: Adoption and Poker
I play a little poker once in a while. I got real lucky a few times at the casinos. Sure, I'd love to play more, but I keep pretty busy with work and family stuff.
