If he's a generally a nice guy, then I would let him simply call, but then I'd raise him and give him a "sorry to do it to you, but I gotta raise" line. I think that keeping things friendly can easily be worth 1 BB later on.

If the guy was a jerk (and not a loose passive jerk), or was over agressive and likely to spew a lot of chips if he went on tilt, I'd probably force him to raise and then cap it.

Let him take his money back. The most you gain is likely 1bet, and you make everybody think you're a great guy. IMO this is more +EV.
