I didn't bet the flop because (and please correct my thinking here) .. I had a bunch of people still in and I didn't want to bet a SB having most call, thus justifying another bet for flush chasers based on pot odds (I hope that makes sense... again, correct me if I'm wrong please!) [/ QUOTE ] OK, that's what I thought. If someone has a four flush on this flop, they are not leaving. They will be your companion to the river no matter what you throw at them. What you need to do is extract value from your already made hand at this point so that you can win the most when they don't hit their flush. This looks to me like a classic case of misapplying the "waiting for the turn to protect your hand" concept. Remember, when you can't protect your hand, as you can't in this case, you MUST bet for value. |

[/ QUOTE ] Exactly, they will miss their flush 65% of the time. Get as much $$ as you can during that 65%, so when you lose 35%, you won't be negative. |

Honestly, I have no good examples handy of a good situation in which to wait for the turn. Generally speaking, you would have to be either HU or with 2 other players in the pot, and the board would have to be very drawless, and the pot would have to be small. You'd also have to know where a bet was coming from, so you could successfully raise someone directly to your right and face the field on the turn with 2 bets cold. None of those apply in this case.
A nice phrase I once heard was: If you never wait until the turn to protect your hand, you'll never be making that big of a mistake. |

ok... that makes sense.... so when do I wait for the turn to protect my hand? When there isn't any sort of draw out there? [/ QUOTE ] This is a common misapplied principle. You can't really protect yourself from the flush draw (who knows if it's out there anyway) so just bet for value. By trying to "protect" yourself to the flush draw, you opened yourself to any pocket pair, gutshot or 3-outer out there. A single bet protects you against those hands. |
