You wouldn't consider it dishonest for someone to pretend they accidentally made a bet larger than they wanted to? C'mon now.
I'm not at all saying that Johnny Chan was intentionally doing anything. Actually at a home game a while back a friend of mine was having trouble telling the difference between two types of chips through his sunglasses and kept screwing up the pot. |

[/ QUOTE ] Two things: The reason it looks like a legitimate error is because Chan should have better EV just playing the hand traditionally, and he knows this. The notion that he would concoct such a scheme seems far-fetched at best, stupid at worst (avoiding the obvious results-oriented arguments). Secondly, even if he did it (which I seriously doubt), it wouldn't be an "angle." There's no cheating involved. It would just be a bit dickish, as I said. |

i never called it cheat, but maybe you weren't talking to me.
im only saying that a lot of assumptions are being made; all except that chan could have shot the angle on purpose. |

Its not an angle shot. An angle shot is when you do something against the rules and hope noby calls you on it as you are in the wrong. What he did(if he did on purpose) was used his cunning way to represent weakness to get the guy to move in on him. this is called pshycology. Its like if you got dealt AA in the big blind then pretended to throw it way acting like you thought you were utg to bait someone into trying to steal your blind. Give him credit not insult him for it! An angle shot i don't approve of.

Is there a difference betwen "being dickish" and shooting an angle?
I always thought angling was different from cheating. Cheating is against the rules and you could get penalized, barred by the casino etc. Angling is within the rules but "being dickish". You couldn't get penalized or barred by the casino but it is conduct that is not welcome and you could get ostracized by your fellow players. Anyway, that's my understanding - maybe I am mistaken. |

angle
1. (n) A maneuver, usually on the border between legality and illegality (but usually clearly unethical), to take unfair advantage of another player. Extreme example: Some clubs consider putting fewer chips than required into the pot an uncompleted bet that is not valid until completed, and that, furthermore, can be removed until such time as sufficient chips are bet. (Fortunately, there aren't many such clubs.) In such a club, you bet $100 and another player puts in $99. You show your cards, which have him beat. He says, "I put in only $99; I didn't call your bet." He withdraws the chips. Of course, if he had you beat, he would quietly take the whole pot. If someone pointed out at that juncture that he called only $99, he would probably say, "Oh, pardon me, just an oversight; I meant to call," add the missing chip, and then drag the pot. All of that is part of an angle. See angle shooter. 2. (v) Perpetrate an angle. More commonly shoot an angle. angle shooter (n phrase) A poker player who uses various underhanded, unfair methods to take advantage of inexperienced opponents. The difference between an angle shooter and a cheat is only a matter of degree. What a cheat or thief does is patently against the rules; what an angle shooter does may be marginally legal, but it's neither ethical nor gentlemanly. Nor is it in the spirit of the game. Unfortunately, poker is not a gentleman's game. In addition to learning how to protect yourself against cheating players, you must learn to watch out for the angle shooters. See angle. You sure about your "this can only be a trap" statement? I don't know if it was intentional or not, but if the situation is described accurately it reads as if it could be called an angle shot. |
