Thanks for the advice, guys. I've been hearing great things about HoH, so I'll start with that first. [/ QUOTE ] HoH is the best book on tournament poker I have read. For cash games it is still appropriate although I would also recommend reading Reuben and Ciaffiones Pot Limit/No Limit poker. |

Nah, you're wrong Mark.
It's more like 80%. Doc PS: They were right about Harrington. Although if you have a couple extra bucks to spend, Ciaffone&Reuben PL&NL Poker is required reading also. Harrington leans toward tournament, Ciaffone leans toward ring games. (I say leans toward, because the poker knowledge in both is useful anywhere, even tho the book is intended one way or the other.) If you do; I'm simply curious as to why (for what reasons). [/ QUOTE ] He touched on it in some other post. He thinks Mason is a meanie. I've read several limit hold'em books, specially HPFAP and WLLH, and have been trying to find a pure no limit hold'em book for a while. I'm just wondering, what's the best pure NL hold'em book you can buy? May it be for either: ring games, or tournaments? I've heard good and bad things about Championship NL and Pot-Limit by Cloutier & McEvoy, and might look into that if there's nothing else. Are there any other better alternatives? [/ QUOTE ] Oh, good. A topic that has never been discussed before. |

I am someone who is also in search of the ultimate NL book. A new copy of Theory and HoH are both in the mail, so perhaps they shall satisfy me. However, as a recent purchaser of Championship No Limit and Pot Limit Hold'em, I will say DO NOT GET IT. It is very entertaining and well-worth a B&N trip to peruse in the store, but not worth $29.95. The advice is not really strategical, just story-like, and filled with crap such as, my personal favorite: "A hand once came up in Dallas when I was playing against all the top players around and was running good. I was on the button looking down at this - 7h2h. There were 5 limpers in front of me. "I'm gonna steal this pot," I thought to myself, and put in a $400 raise. Much to my dismay, three of them called me. But the flop came 7-7-2. Now, how could they have put me on a hand like that?!" Yeah, that's great advice Cloutier. [/ QUOTE ] i have never read this book, that was hysterical!!! |

Sadly you didn't post this yesterday. I just bought Cloutier and upon reading it last night came to the same conclusion.

I sat in Borders yesterday and read the Cloutier book (including the cited passage) for about 2 hours, then bought the last copy of H on H. I didn't think very highly of the Cloutier book at all at the time.
Then I went home and applied some of what I'd read to a MTT. Following TJ's advice about 75% of the time, I ended up in 10th place (out of 135 people) without having to think very much. You can't argue with the man's success--there may be something to what he has to say. Meanwhile, I can't wait to get home tonight and see what happens when I play 100% TJ Cloutier!!! Including that 7-2!!! |

I think it's an excellent book. It is not well liked here because it is anecdotal, and shows his thought process. Which is something you have to learn.
It does not have the expected STEP1: STEP2: STEP3: approach, which may not be applicable to no limit anyway. I think his book should be read by any well educated poker player, but don't get me wrong, it is not in Harrington's class. Harrington's book is by far the best NL Tournament book we have ever had.
