It looks to me as though he thought that he could get Lederer to lay down a K high flush if he over bet the pot.

Me thinks Doyle either wants to get paid off with this big bet or win the pot without showing his cards, both are to his advantage. He may have also picked up on the fact that Howard made a little bit of a hand (two pair) and was representing "a move" hoping to get called or reraised.
