I think that they are to be used together. One without the other could work but it's way easier with both. It's so much easier to understand what the books are saying when you have unlimited help and examples.
If I had to pick one or the other, I think I'd take the boards.

I have found the 2 + 2 forums to have an extremely low signal/noise ratio. I have learned much more about poker from the "Older Archives" category at the left. Best of luck.

Make a friend with a fellow 2+2er have him look at hands talk to him about poker.. at the same time post hands contribute to other posts and read the forums that spark a interest.

Be sure to avoid the WPT forum like it's on fire and you're covered in gasoline.
