Re: Folding a set in a big pot for one bet.
Bet it. Check behind , and you will have to call a bet, or bets on the river. If someone has hit it on the turn, you will get re-raised, and then you have a decision to make.

So. I've raised the flop, everyone calls, on turn, it's checked to me. Do I bet? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, even if they all show you straights. |

EDIT: By the way, that fold sucks. I'm not saying this to be mean, but it's really really awful that you would fold a set on the river for 1 bet because there's a possible straight on the board. [/ QUOTE ] there's a bet and 3 calls, and the most popular card in the game makes a straight with which most players won't raise, and a guy who bet and got FIVE calls on the turn bets again on the river. calling there sucks |

Re: Folding a set in a big pot for one bet.
Without raising at any point in the hand I don't see how you could be sure enough to fold the river. If you raise the flop and he leads the turn there's a much better case for it.

Re: Folding a set in a big pot for one bet.
If your opponent showed you a made straight, you should still raise the flop for value.

Re: Folding a set in a big pot for one bet.
when he bets and gets 5 callers, then bets again, he's probably not bluffing, and he probably doesn't have two pair. it's also pretty unlikely that 5 people are hanging around without at least an A.

Re: Folding a set in a big pot for one bet.
there is no way to protect your hand in this pot, therefore, a value raise on the flop is a MUST.
i see where you are coming from with waiting for the turn, but i think waiting for the turn to raise is best used in situations where you are in a position to protect your hand. where you cannot protect on the flop, you protect on the turn. also, i call the river bet every time here, even though i am 90% sure i'm had. cheers! |

Re: Folding a set in a big pot for one bet.
ode,
to put this in simpler terms, in terms of your advantage in this hand, not only on the flop, but the turn as well. if i were operating a casino, and i had a game where the house(me) had a set of fours on an identical board, and 5 players ALL were given a straight against me, i would take all bets against me filling up. the house advantage in my game would be similar to, though slightly less than, double zero roulette. not only should you raise the flop here, but also the TURN! not doing so reduces your long term EV. give me your situation every hand, every day, and i will be a VERY wealthy man. cheers! |

Re: Folding a set in a big pot for one bet.
w3rd, and your equity with two cards yet to come is huge here *even if there are already 4 made straights out there*.
