Good post. I agree with you mostly.

Last June my wife complained about "that smell" in the Excaliber. We were just in the Excaliber last weekend. The smell was gone. But the goofy King Arthur theme is still overblown. Is THEHotel the other tower at Mandalay Bay? We stayed at MB last week. We got the room for $119 a night. For $200+ a night it's overpriced unless you really like the pool area. The room went to $240 a night so we moved to another hotel.

We stayed at Bally's last June and my wife (much pickier than me) said it was just fine. No complaints about Bally's. I'd add Barbary Coast, a small old fashioned place to the list of where I'd look to stay.

Rates for Vegas hotels go up and down drastically depending on the day. And the rates can change daily too.

My trip is sometime in 2005 and i promise that i will send a tripreport. Is in december pokeraction in vegas or only sharks that kill tourists ? And perhaps someone can give me a tip about " you MUST have seen ....in Vegas-area"

tip: go to mandalay bay (I think) and check out their aquarium. I think it costs like 10 bucks, but it is amazing. It is something like the biggest aquarium west of the mississipi. I think everyone should go see it. Just a suggestion of something to do other than gamble and other than look at the buildings everyone has seen 1 million times on TV.

Hotel I enjoyed was The Mirage. The poker room was one of the better rooms in Vegas. The rooms were excellent, great casino, and excellent location.

Make sure you at least go play at Binions Horseshoe to see where the WSOP was played.

Things to do: Go to Hard Rock Hotel bar, go see the Blue Man Group show, go to the needle at night to see the vegas horizon lit up, see Bellagio fountains.

Other quality hotel of poker: Sahara, Golden Nugget, Bellagio, Orleans.

Make sure you play a few tournaments if you have the time for them.

Forget the Boardwalk. You are going to be travelling half way across the world, to the cultural center of the universe, so you want a little flavor. Stay at Treasure Island or Monte Carlo or any of the nicer places that offer deals. I get e-mails from Mandalay Bay offering rooms super cheap. There is no reason to live out of a rental car while in Vegas. Have fun.

Nice to hear the IP has remodelled. Last time there, about ten years ago, it was like sleeping in a warm vat of poo. To call it a dump would have been an insult to dumps. Plus, I had no interest in freako car collections or tight clusters of nervous tourists playing blackjack, chain smoking and charting dealer hands on astrological charts. The casino looked like the 2nd place finisher in the Star Wars alien bar competition.

If you are planning to play poker, then try to get the poker room rate. If you qualify for it (based on avilability), then the price gets slashed as long as you get about 6hrs of poker a day. I think the Mirage was running for about $100 a day.
I think the Bellagio is about $130 under the poker room rate.

If you are looking for something outside the city, you are not terribly far from the Grand Canyon.

My wife and I always go to Sedona Arizona when we are out west. Sedona has a lot of small shops and some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever scene. The red rock formations are wonderful.

I guess we should ask how old you are and if you are bringing a MRS. If you are a 20 something bachelor, skip Sedona and the Grand Canyon, hit the Ghost Bar at the Palms or the pool at The Hard Rock Casino.

Default A few more or less random thoughts from my two recent trips...

There is no reason to travel thousands of miles to sleep in an armpit. If this is a first Vegas stay and you are going for the experience, stay someplace nice. If you are going in order to play poker, and just play poker, then stay off the strip and get a cheap room to crash in for a few daylight hours.

I liked the reviews at www.cheapovegas.com. They looked pretty honestly at the various hotels, and I felt their reviews were right on the mark. If you have a standard room at one of the nicer hotels, flashing a $20 to the desk clerk can sometimes get you a suite that would cost $75-100 extra per night.

You can sometimes get deals at even The Mirage, where I stayed for $89/night last summer. Monte Carlo seems the best value. Think of it as sort of a Toyota Camry. Very nice, clean, comfortable, solid car, but not flashy.

If you can swing Bellagio or Mandalay Bay (think BMW) these are truly top facilities.

1. Rent a car in advance - it's inexpensive, you'll get around without any problems (parking is free), and the desert around Vegas and specially Red Rock Canyon is was to beaautiful to miss out on.

2. Stay at The Orleans ... like one mile off the strip, there's a free shuttle but it's no time in a car, and they're offering very good rooms - same price as San Remo, higher class, MUCH cleaner, and one of the best poker rooms for low limit tourneys (two every day).

Best,

McMelchior (Johan)
