[ QUOTE ]
Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving
a Social Security check every month (or will soon be) -- and then finding
that we are getting only 85% of the money we paid to the federal government
to "put away," you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which party took Social Security from an independent fund and put it in
the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratic-controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which party put a tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic party.

Q: Which party increased the tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic Party with Al Gore casting the deciding vote.

Q: Which party decided to give money to immigrants? immigrants? immigrants?
A: That's right, immigrants moved into this country and at 65 got SSI
(Social Security). The Democratic Party gave that to them although they
never paid a dime into it.

Then, after doing all this, the Democrats turn around and tell you the
Republicans want to take your Social Security. And the worst part about it
is, people believe it!

Excellent reply.

For my two cents, I recall that SSI was a combination of three cash grant programs known as Aid to the Blind, Old Age Assistance and Aid to the Permanently and Totally Disabled. These were cash grant programs for people who had virtually no means of support. Along with Aid ot Families with Dependent Children, these constituted the original New Deal "welfare" programs. There was and I presume still is an eligibility requirement of being very poor. Under the Nixon administration, these progams were combined into one program called Supplemental Security Income and from the general jurisdiction of HEW (now HHS) to the Social Security Administration, probably for efficiency reasons.

The point is that SSI is an aid to the poor program, and not "social security" as most people understand that term.

Once when I was on Jury duty they were trying to select a jury for a case where a guy who had penis enlargement surgery was suing his doctor because it didn't work.

As each potential juror was interviewed the lawyer for the man asked them if the fact that he had penis enlargement surgery made them think less of him as a person. Everyone of them said no. When they interviewed me, I said yes

Sorry, I didn't read the first post close enough to see that it was just an e-mail, not necessarily your beliefs. Yeah, I'm a bad person...
