MP3

Stands for "MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3." It is the most popular compressed audio file format. An MP3 file is about one tenth the size of the original audio file, but the sound is nearly CD-quality. Because of their small size and good fidelity, MP3 files have become a popular way to store music files on both computers and portable devices. There are also many Web sites, like MP3.com and RioPort.com, that maintain huge archives of audio files in MP3 format.

Can anyone explain to me why anyone would own one of these?
That sounds way too confusing for me.

It's not too confusing. You can download the files, both from legal and non legal sources. Or you can "rip" them from a cd. This process is roughly equivalent to recording a tv show or movie on a vcr once you get used to it.

The benefit is that the files are small. You can buy an mp3 player which is basically like a walkman. Popular mp3 players like the Apple Ipod store thousands of songs and are about the size of a cassette tape. When you see poker on tv where it's legal to listen to music you will see a lot of players using ipods. They are the small white players.

In my experience, Ipods are also popular among small Asian players.

Thanks everyone. (I also got a couple of messages explaining)

I don't do music and poker, and I do a lot of poker.... as SD says, it explains a lot.

As to listening to music in live play, well I've seen it done and always thought they were missing out on rather a lot of information.
