Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
anyone her think that online play and rigourous review of play with Poker Tracker or the like is superior to live play
Well, it's definitely a great way to ramp up and learn. On the other hand, I read an awful lot of posts by people who play 4 tables at once online because they get bored with one. I'd say those people would be toast in a B&M tournament playing only 35 hands per hour. put up with the casino environment. What's not to like about the casino environment? A monkey could have won the title with the cards that Robert V was getting in the WSOP '02.

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
Correction: Paul Phillips made BILLIONS when he sold his dot com company. Even if he were to win the WSOP, it wouldn't make even a slight dent in his style of living.

I guess if you start loosening up and playing more hands because you're bored you'd indeed be "toast," but overall I don't get what you're saying here. |

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
i don't think people under estimate luck here, luck is huge and it's waaaaaaay more important then skill in the short term. We play for EV, and that's long term. If you really want a mind job, i'd be willing to bet that jonny chan is no more then 3 times as likely as you are to win the WSOP if you were to play next year.
Note: doesn't sounds like much, but being 3 times as likely as average to win, means a +20k expectation in that event. |

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
Hey,
If an extremely smart and savvy kid got his start in poker at the age of say 18, I see no reason he/she couldn't have earned over $2M by the age of 24 playing fulltime, even if they started with only $500. How much of that would be their bankroll would depend on what type of lifestyle they wanted to live and how wisely they invested, e.g. making wise staking decisions, etc. GoT |

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
I think the list of players who could turn 500 into 2M in 6 years is a very short one. I am sure it can be done, but it would require a great deal of talent as well as study.

Correction: Paul Phillips made BILLIONS when he sold his dot com company. [/ QUOTE ] You are so, so far off the mark here it is not even close. Phillips owned less than 2% of "his" company when they were acquired (the founder/CEO, FWIW, owned over 40%). When announced, the deal was for $4B. By the time the deal closed, it was for less than $2B. Within 6 months (a typical lockup period), the value of the deal was about $300M. I have no idea when Paul got out or what he did with his money, so I suspect he could have anywhere from $5-50M. He's very rich. But he's nowhere close to a billionaire. [ QUOTE ] Even if he were to win the WSOP, it wouldn't make even a slight dent in his style of living. [/ QUOTE ] As I said, I don't know what Paul's net worth is, but I suspect winning the WSOP would have a material impact on his net worth. |
