Poker adds on TV

I heard about this yesterday on the radio in New York. Just posted about this on the Internet forum. I found the link to the website. www.pokerinathens.org

It may be that party is selling into the local cable providers' slots and not the network slots. I saw one on a Fox network MLB telecast a couple of weeks ago, but there's no way for me to know whether I was watching a Fox slot or a Cox Cable slot.

Party (.com not .net) has ads on the tv like screens in the elevators in my building, I noticed the first one yesterday.

I've been seeing the Party Poker dot com ads quite a bit lately. But, they advertise it as the biggest "Poker School" on the internet. They don't mention cash games at all. So, maybe this is how they somehow avoid the technical issue of offshore internet gambling.

On a similar note, has anyone noticed how the major hard liquor makers can advertise their brand on TV in the guise of their watered-down wine-cooler type drinks, eg Smirnoff ICE. How long before the cigarette industry figures out how to capitalize on this loophole? Maybe a TV commercial for a Marlboro "home chemotherapy kit" could make for some snappy branding. lmao

I saw the ad yesterday on ESPN (sometime around coverage of home run derby and the allstar game)

I thought it was real unusual - but didn't notice the .net - (I was at an angle from the TV)

it's interesting the holes in the law that people can use and get away with...LOL - but yah...they're only advertising how to play...not a real money site

as has been pointed out before...it's difficult to tell for certain whether the ad is network-wide or whether it's just via your local cable-network.

it took us awhile to determine that the ads on CNBC were nationwide.


the baseball ad on fox-network that i saw i'm pretty sure was on the network.
i'm in memphis...and a guy in philly said he saw the same ad at the same time.


if the ads you see mention 'best online poker-school' etc...then this is probably the dot-net ads i think...
keep a watchful eye on whether they are dot-net or dot-com.


the whole elevator-ads thing is interesting too.


total number of players right now is 43k.
maybe there is a greater percentage of play-money players because of the dot-net ads....but i think the games are getting slightly fishier again.
and i'm pretty sure 1 or 2 months ago it wasn't breaking 35k typically on a wednesday night....but i don't swing by pokerpulse that often so i don't really know for sure.


anyway, i sure don't think the ads can hurt.

It's also important to realize that the issue of offshore online gaming is not settled in the country - and some are willing to take the risk of running into trouble with the law, because the law is vague and not formed yet. Many believe that we are moving towards a full acceptance of online gaming (many believe we are not, as well), especially with the WTO's stance on the issue.

Some take the view that they are willing to gamble with the outcome, as they expect to be told "stop" before being criminally charged. When told "stop" they will then stop, but not until then. Also - just merely accepting advertising $$ for potentially quasi-illegal online gambling itself has not been established to be an illegal act itself. That's why Card Player Magazine is full of internet ads.

The issue is vague, and will continue to be for years in the U.S.

No need for any comps or anything, but I have seen partypoker.com ads three times on a local AZ Diamondbacks telecast here in the Phoenix area. I have also seen one other ad on another local channel but do not recall the site. They were only local ads though, not national.

so am I the only person who is constantly seeing ads for "Golden Palace Poker" during WPT and celeberity pokeer on Bravo? I went to the site and it was definately real money. It looks like a pretty shady site.

The Federal law in the USA is not vague at all. It is not a Federal crime to place an offshore bet whether it be on poker, casino style games or a sporting event. Applicable statutes in your local jurisdiction may vary.
