I have been in San Jose for poker. 10% uncapped rakes, no big games ever go, and the casinos are located in what isn't the best part of town, and unless you have a good command of Spanish, you're not going to be in good shape. December is the rainy season from what I understand, as well.

Stick to Southern California, LA-area. That way Vegas is only a 3 hour drive!

You said you'd be here for a several months. After you've been in LA a little while, a weekend trip down to San Diego (only 1 1/2 hours away) might be a good change of scenery. Oceans Eleven, Sycuan, Viejas, and Pechanga are decent places to play. They don't really offer anything you won't find in LA, but it's a nice town if you want a break for a few days.
