Washington state allows (outside of tribal casinos) both house-backed (i.e. table games) and non-house-backed (i.e. poker) cardrooms. Only card games are allowed (no slots, roulette, etc..) and there is a limit of $100 bet on any one random event (so $100 max BJ bet, and the theoritical highest poker limits allowed would be $12.50-$25.00 with a cap of 3 raises). Where I used to play (the Hideaway, RIP) was just a poker room - no table games. So far the other casinos I've seen seem to have both table games and a poker room.

The hideaway was having major financial troubles in its last days - I heard the would-be owner (he was leasing with an option to buy, but decided not to) say that he lost almost $100k in the three months that he was leasing the place. They had trouble keeping a game going, though, while other room in the area seem to be pretty full. So its hard to say how the cardroom economy is doing in general.

Oh, and most of the larger cities in washington (at least eastern washington) have city-wide bans on gambling, so there's no card rooms in seattle, redmond, bellevue, etc...

hope that's informative

Re: Your Avatar.

I always hoped that Chandler Bing would snap and kick Phebe into a coma from which she would never recover. It's not that I hated the character on Friends, I just think the audience would have been well-served if she had been shot to death while singing in that crappy coffee shop.

does anyone know if the majority of cardrooms are making a profit or if many are struggling

[/ QUOTE ]

The small ones I go to seem to be doing well. The one right here in town only has 5 tables (city ordinance) and has been around forever. The owner and all the dealers are always happy, so I'd have to say the money is decent.

In WA, a lot of the cardrooms are doing well, some are struggling.

Most of them are poorly managed according to a buddy who manages a local cardroom chain. Not a lot of thought goes into making a profit through marketing and efficiency strategies. Owners are the "Why aren't we making money!? Time to fire people or close down" types.

Some cities in WA legalize cardrooms as another poster mentioned, there are specific rules, regulations, etc.

You dont have to worry about that. They're doin fine...real fine. From little 2 table rooms on up to the 150 table places.

I may be in Tunica now...but I'm from Calif. Lived there all my life till 3 yrs ago. Mother was in the business when I was 10 yrs old, owned her own 2 table room attached to a bar years ago...before Holdem was legal in Cal.

Califonia has had poker rooms for over 150 yrs. While I cant tell you the EXACT laws, it was always understood only "games of skill" were allowed. And one couldnt play against the house. Thats not to say "schills" were not used in the smaller rooms years ago(A schill plays house money, a prop plays their own). Pai gow poker and the other asian games are considered games of skill and thus allowed. The distinction tho is that each player has the opportunity to play the bank. The House has a drop generally based on 1% of the bets from the "player side" with a $1 minimum per hand! Yes they have drops of $10, $15, 20$ even up to $50 per hand!

I know Oregon and Washington have also had card rooms for a long time. The rules up there may be about the same. I dont know.

There are rumors of a poker-only casino going up some time soon. The word poker is used very loosely here, though - the max bet allowed in the state is $5, so the games are nearly all 2-5 spread limit (and some 5/5) and only barely resemble real poker.

If they're ALWAYS happy then it's probably the Prozac, not the money.
