[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Any of Ken Warrens books. [/ QUOTE ] Unfortunately, the first book I ever read on poker was by Ken Warren. At the time, the book seemed great! But after reading some real poker books, I can see why this is the popular opinion. [/ QUOTE ] I'm with you. Took me awhile to unlearn Warren's tight, passive style. [/ QUOTE ] Awesome, same thing here. I thought "what crazy people they are raising with JJ and AK also!!!1one!!11". |

Any poker DVD...just don't get them! [/ QUOTE ] You have seen every poker DVD, and they are all bad?? Howard Lederer's NL DVD are well done, although the first one is fairly basic. Mason reviewed them in this month's magazine, and gave the first one an 8 and the second one a 9. Phil Gordon's is also good. The World Poker Players Conference 2-DVD set (Caro, Jones, Negreanu, etc.) is uneven, but has some very good stuff on it. Overall, well worth the price. |

For beginner's books, I suggest Carson's book.
I am mostly a tournament player, so may list include "Pot Limit and No Limit Holdem" by Cloutier and McEvoy, and the tournamet books by Shane Smith and Sylvester Suzuki (both psuedonymns). |

I remember getting into an argument that you should NEVER raise with JJ UTG in a small stakes limit hold'em game. Glad I unlearned that crap. |

Haven't watched those two...but the three that I have seen in the past have been down right horrible... So I'm just assuming that most other DVD's are just as bad... [/ QUOTE ] This would be like me saying all poker books are bad because of the three Ken Warren books I've read. 2 great DVDs out of however many they make isn't bad. In fact, it's probably a higher percentage than there are good poker books. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Any poker DVD [/ QUOTE ] Just not true. Final Table with Phil Gordon is great and I heard More Secrets by Howard Lederer is also good. [/ QUOTE ] I also think PSI is a fascinating display of NLHE SNG play. [/ QUOTE ] What's PSI? |

I haven't read a lot of books, but I heartily endorse Betgo's opinion that McEvoy and Cloutier's "Pot Limit and No Limit Holdem" was probably the worst one I've read. At the time I paid $39.95 for it and was extremely disappointed at the sparse amount of information in it. If I recall, it was about 200 pages, and at least half of it was devoted to TJ's biography and his "stories." They were interesting, but I was looking for a strategy book that would offer more than "play tight, and by the way when I was in this game in Texas..." Because I was so disappointed with that book I never even considered the other Championship Series books. TJ and McEvoy may be great players, but I got the strong impression they were holding back secrets and just trying to pick up some easy money.
