Default Re: Is NL a flawed form of poker?

Thanks for the replies. I agree with much of what's been said.

It seems the consensus is that "yeah, it works".

Now...Is there anything different about the NL 1000 tables that would prevent it from working there? Ghazban's take seems to say there's not. Any thoughts on how many "mini bui-ins" you would need to handle the variance?

If this is suicidal, I'd really appreciate any advice that will save me should I seriously contemplate doing it...

I enjoy deep stack play, and that's what I want to concentrate on, but for clearing bonuses, or building up a roll safely, this seems like a decent alternative...

(LuckyYou777, I did a serarch for that prima 100/200 thread, but got WAY too many irrelevant answers, and couldn't find it. If you or anyone could link to it, that'd be great.)

FWIW, my buddy who plays the stars NL1000 games says that the players who buy short get housed on a regular basis.

I think if you are very selective, you can make this strategy work at any limit. The problem is that people go overboard with it, and try to steal pots with hands like AJ by moving in preflop.

If you are multi-tabling and using this strategy, I would suggest having atleast 30 mini buy-ins.

I would suggest not drawing any conclusions about NL from playing at 25/50 or 100NL, any sensible system will work there. For example :
Preflop:
pp, AK; suited connectors and AQs from 2last positions
preflopraise : AK,AA,KK,QQ always raise 3BB + (number of limpers*BB)

play after flop :
if you have TP or overpair or set, bet 2/3 of the pot otherwise fold
if you have openended str8draw or flush draw call if pot-odds (forget about implied odds) are sufficient
if you hit, bet the pot

play on the turn :
bet 1/2pot if you still have TP or overpair

river play:
bet 1/3pot if you still have TP or overpair (or sets etc)

fold to any serious aggresion with one pair, if one player come over the top of you more than 2times, start to call him.

buyin : 80BB, cashout aroun 130BB

it works, and its crushing

Best wishes

The short answer is that, yes, you can use something like this system to make money in NL games where everybody else is deeper but you can make more by being deeper yourself and outplaying your opponents. If everybody at the table buys in short and uses that system, success will be determined totally by the luck of the draw. The system described in the book works because big stacks cannot simultaneously play optimally against other big stacks and small stacks at the same time.

Ghazban, you silly monkey, you know that luck of the draw wouldn't really create success. (over the long term everyone would lose lose to the rake)

But good point re: hard to play vs small and deep stacks silmultaneously.

(being a nit)

Edit: Sorry bro, just got up and my endorphins are running high right now, so I'm a little silly.

Its all good. The only reason I mentioned that scenario (everybody trying to use the short buy system at once) was because the OP was asking about if there were circumstances where that system would not be +EV and it was the only one I could come up with off the top of my head. Without rake, this would be EV neutral.

and when enough folks do it the complaints will make the sites insist on say 50% min buy -in and you're left with a system that doesn't work and you've forgotten how to play proper poker...

Thanks but I'll take my 12PTBB/100 2-tabling over this.

It also takes the guesswork out of postflop play which is a big advantage for hands like QQ and JJ and TT that are difficult to play OOP when any overcards flop.
